A Day of Firsts, Sailing at Hout Bay, 9 September 2026

Two lucky students from Kronendal were recently given the opportunity of a lifetime — two sailing lessons hosted at Hout Bay Yacht Club by the Little Optimist Trust.

For these two young siblings, it was a day full of firsts. They had never been on the water before, let alone stepped onto a sailing boat. The excitement was mixed with a few nerves, especially for the younger brother, who was feeling a little anxious about this new experience. His sister, on the other hand, was eager and ready to learn!

We met them at the gate and, to keep the nerves and energy up, we sang songs all the way to the boat. Once on board, we introduced them to the different parts of the boat and gave them a simple introduction to how sailing works.

But the real magic happened once we got out onto the water.

With the safety and support of the instructors around them, the children were given the freedom to explore, try things for themselves and simply be themselves. Slowly, the nerves gave way to curiosity, smiles and excitement.

It was more than just a sailing lesson. It was an opportunity to experience something completely new, to build confidence, and to discover that they are capable of far more than they may have imagined.

Sometimes, all a child needs is a safe space, a little encouragement, and the freedom to try.

And on this day, the water became that space.
