The day began with a light drizzle, but at the Little Optimist Sailing Academy, we stay optimistic, so a little rain definitely wasn’t going to stop the fun. Our friends from Astra Special School arrived full of smiles, excitement, and curiosity, especially those experiencing sailing for the very first time.
Before heading onto the water, the boys and girls were given materials to create their ideal superhero. We encouraged them to think beyond TV characters and storybooks, reminding them that superheroes can also be the people we admire in everyday life. That’s when the magic truly began. Their imaginations ran wild, some created their fathers, others their mothers, while some chose Batman or Superman. One particular Grade R student created herself and proudly said, “I am my own superhero because every day I get to be strong and brave.” Safe to say there were a few emotional hearts in the room after hearing those powerful words.
The adventure continued with sailing sessions filled with laughter, excitement, and a few happy screams whenever the boats picked up speed. Some students loved it so much they went sailing more than once, while others found joy in the simple moments, riding the elevator over and over again, kicking a soccer ball around in the park, and soaking in the breathtaking city views with the mountains resting under clouds like a soft blanket.
And just when everyone thought the day couldn’t get any better, we gathered together for a lively puppet show focused on bullying, kindness, and standing up for one another. The students were completely drawn into the story laughing, reacting, shouting advice to the puppets, and cheering for the characters making good choices. After the show, we held an interactive Q&A session where the learners shared their thoughts, lessons, and personal reflections. Their honesty, confidence, and understanding reminded us just how important these conversations are.
From creativity and courage to teamwork, laughter, and learning, the day was filled with moments that reminded us how powerful safe spaces and meaningful experiences can be. Truly beautiful.”
