Marsh Memorial Multi Day Holiday Programme – July 2025

From Wobbly Decks to Brave Hearts

There’s something truly magical about watching a group of young people find their confidence on water, and last week’s visit from Marsh Memorial was nothing short of inspiring.

From the moment they stepped into the Academy, this mixed group of boys and girls brought a vibrant energy with them. Curious, playful, and full of questions, they lit up our space during the storytelling session. Their feedback wasn’t just polite it was personal. Real. The kind that reminds you why we do what we do.

We kicked off the week with a challenge: we asked the kids to teach us something. “What games do you play at home?” we asked. It didn’t take long before we were learning new songs, clapping games, and group challenges that had us in stitches and yes, one of our own team members was put to the test by the kids’ creativity. Let’s just say… the pressure was real!

But it wasn’t all play. Some of the children arrived nervous, even anxious about getting on a boat. One boy bravely shared that he feared both boats and flights. He’s scared he won’t be able to protect himself if anything happens. That honesty spoke volumes. It reminded us how deeply courage is built, not forced.

And that courage? It blossomed. By the end of the program, these same kids were sailing like naturals, confident, joyful, and in control. What once seemed scary (yes, even the wobbly floating deck!) became a playground of growth. Some of them even took part in their very own sailing race to wrap up the week, tossing their worries overboard and moving full speed ahead.

Beyond learning to sail, they learned about the power of teamwork, the value of friendship, and the beauty of respecting our oceans and environment. As we watched them cheer each other on, support those who were scared, and share in each other’s wins, it became clear that this wasn’t just about sailing.

It was about letting go. Learning to trust. And realizing that, even in deep water, they’re more capable than they ever thought.

Thank you, Marsh Memorial crew. You brought your stories, your laughter, your fears, your games, and most of all, your hearts. We can’t wait to have you back.

Our incredible sponsors continue to believe in our vision and it is programmes like this that validate our mission.
