Ocean Optimist Experience, 2 December 2025

From sailing a Dinghy to stepping onto a Hunter, talk about a summer to remember. On the 2nd of December, our young friend Khanyisa and some of his friends from Astra Special School were welcomed at Hout Bay Yacht Club for a sailing experience they won’t soon forget.

“When I arrived, everything felt different,” Khanyisa shared. “The boats were big. The ocean was big. I felt nervous at first but excited at the same time.” That nervous excitement quickly turned into joy. The experience, he said, was lovely, and his friends loved it, too. Once back at school, they couldn’t stop telling everyone about the day, and Khanyisa admits it made him feel like “a cool guy who does cool things.”

When asked about his favourite boat, Khanyisa smiled and said he prefers the Optimist. “I feel like I’m in control when I’m in it.”

Moments like these remind us that sailing isn’t just about the boats. It’s about confidence, courage, and the stories our young sailors carry with them long after they return to shore. 🌊⛵
