On the 20th of September, we had the joy of hosting the Ocean Pledge for a one-day program, and what an unforgettable day it was!
We started off with a trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium, and for many of the kids, it was their very first time stepping into that underwater world. Their excitement was written all over their faces as they explored and discovered creatures they had only ever heard about.
Once back at the Academy, we headed to the park for a quick energizer. Nothing gets everyone moving like a round of “head, shoulders, knees, and toes”, especially when marshmallows are waiting as a treat afterward. The young ocean ambassadors laughed, moved, and shook off the bus ride, ready for the rest of the day.
Back in the classroom, with chairs neatly set up, we shared some of our own inspiring stories. They listened closely, taking in every word, and the atmosphere was filled with curiosity and excitement for what was still to come.
Then, it was time to hit the water. The children hopped into their Optimist boats and, before long, were sailing with confidence. They picked it up so quickly. It was as if they had been doing it for ages. Watching them glide across the water was a highlight for everyone.
When sailing wrapped up, it was time to learn some practical skills with a knot-tying session. There was plenty of focus and determination as they all worked on their ropes, and you could see the pride when they mastered each knot. To top it all off, we hosted a certificate ceremony to celebrate our brand-new Sailing Champions, smiles, and applause filled the room.
We ended the day on a high note with a Cha Cha Slide dance competition. They went head-to-head with one of our energetic facilitators, and the room was bursting with laughter, cheering, and plenty of dance moves.
The young Ocean Ambassadors closed with a heartfelt speech to our Little Optimist Sailing crew, and it was the perfect ending to a day full of fun, learning, and new experiences.
We loved every moment and can’t wait to see our young friends again soon!
