This July, we kicked off our Multi-day program with an unforgettable group of young people from Heideveld… and what a way to start! 💙⛵

From the moment they arrived on the 7th of July, their energy lit up the Academy. Before we could even say “life jackets,” they already had them on. It looked like they’d been sailing for years!

At The Little Optimist Sailing Academy, every voice matters. So, instead of handing them a list of rules, we invited them to create the rules for the week themselves. The result? A space built on respect, teamwork, and ownership from day one.

We thought we’d begin with a few icebreakers… but this group had other plans! They took over and taught our crew some of the games they play back home. It was the perfect reminder that learning goes both ways.

To warm up on the chilly winter morning, the young people enjoyed cups of hot chocolate while our facilitators shared inspiring stories about courage, perseverance, and believing in yourself. It was the perfect way to set the tone for the week ahead.

Next came water safety. But when it was time to put on life jackets, we quickly realised this group didn’t need much guidance. They were already geared up and ready for adventure!

Then, it was time to sail. They climbed into the dinghies with confidence, huge smiles on their faces, and if you asked them, they probably would’ve stayed out on the water all day.

As if that wasn’t enough excitement, we wrapped up with an introduction to skateboarding… and these young champions absolutely stole the show. They stepped onto their boards fearlessly, fell, laughed, got back up, and tried again.

One moment we’ll never forget was when one young girl stood up after a fall, smiled, and said:

“Miss, don’t worry, I didn’t get hurt. I’m the Green Frog.”

How amazing is it that she was already applying what she’d learned? Resilience wasn’t just something we spoke about. It was something she was already living.

Day one reminded us that courage is contagious, confidence grows with every attempt, and sometimes the greatest lessons come from simply giving young people the space to shine.

And this was only Day One. 💙🌊🛹
