This past weekend (28 – 30 November), The Little Optimist Sailing Academy had the incredible opportunity to be part of the very first Surf Expo Africa and what an unforgettable three days it was! From 28–30 November, our station became a vibrant pocket of love, optimism, and pure fun in the middle of the Expo.
The moment the doors opened, kids were sprinting toward our pool like it was treasure. Their eyes lit up the second they spotted the pink flamingo floating, and before we knew it, boys and girls of all ages were jumping in to float for charity. Some were nervous at first, some were brave from the get-go, but every single one of them left the pool with huge smiles and a story to tell.
But that was only part of the magic.
Right next to the pool, our colouring station was buzzing nonstop. Tiny artists took over the tables, crayons everywhere, adding colour and creativity to the Expo. Parents joined in, too, some pretending to “help,” most actually having just as much fun as the little ones. It became a space where families slowed down, connected, and created small moments of joy together.
Throughout the weekend, we also hosted a silent auction, a raffle, and a lucky draw that had kids, parents, and visitors buzzing with excitement. The prizes were genuinely cool, from unique Little Optimist goodies to special experiences that made people’s eyes light up. You could feel the anticipation each time someone placed a bid or bought a ticket. It wasn’t just about winning; it was about supporting a mission they truly believed in.
Every entry, every bid, and every ticket sold helped raise funds that directly support the children and communities we work with. People walked away not just with prizes but with a sense of purpose, knowing they were contributing to something meaningful.
On the final day, our founder closed the weekend with a heartfelt, inspiring talk. He shared our mission, our impact, and the real-life stories behind The Little Optimist, stories of courage, healing, hope, and believing in brighter futures. You could feel the room shift as he spoke; people were deeply moved.
The first-ever Surf Expo Africa was truly a beautiful experience. fun, colourful, emotional, and filled with community spirit. We left feeling grateful, joyful, and hopeful for all that’s still to come.
Here’s to more sailing, more smiles, more impact, and more optimism.
