Vista Nova Inspiration Day – Learning to Fail, Learning to Sail 📚⛵

On the 23rd of July, we had the privilege of spending an unforgettable day with the incredible learners of Vista Nova. With activities specially designed for each age group, the day was filled with stories, challenges, laughter, and life lessons that will stay with us for a long time.

Our morning began with the Pre-Grade R to Grade 3 learners as they gathered for a special reading session. From the very first page, every pair of eyes was fixed on the story. The children listened with curiosity and excitement, hanging on to every word. When it came time for questions, little hands shot into the air as they eagerly shared their thoughts and answered with confidence.

Together, we discovered a beautiful message: never give up on your dreams, lead with kindness, and always believe in yourself. Watching their imaginations come alive reminded us that stories don’t just entertain,they inspire children to dream bigger.

Later in the day, it was time for our Grade 4 to Grade 7 learners to take part in an inspiration session centered around one of life’s greatest teachers: failure.

We began with a simple question:

“Who here has failed before?”

The room fell silent. Not a single hand went up. To many children, failing feels like something to be ashamed of. But as the teachers and facilitators raised their own hands, something remarkable happened. Slowly but surely, more and more learners began raising theirs, too. In that moment, they realised they weren’t alone.

Then the real fun began.

Each learner received a balloon and had to use it to knock down a tower of paper cups. It looked simple… until it wasn’t! Around the room, others wrestled with the Infinite Knot, attempted the Figure of Eight without any instructions, and solved riddles without a single clue. There were moments of confusion, plenty of laughter, and countless failed attempts, but not once did they stop trying.

They observed, adapted, encouraged one another, and kept going until they discovered what worked. It was incredible to watch resilience unfold right before our eyes.

One learner captured the entire lesson in a sentence we’ll never forget:

“FAIL is the First Attempt In Learning… and SAIL is the Second Attempt In Learning.” ⛵

Could there have been a more fitting lesson for a sailing academy?

To make the experience even more memorable, we also had one of our Optimist dinghies on display. Many learners had only heard about our little boats before, but now they could touch one, climb inside it, imagine sailing it, and dream about the adventures that await them on the water.

As the day came to a close, every learner received a medal, not because they had won every challenge, but because they had the courage to fail.

For some, failure was still uncomfortable. But they chose to keep trying anyway. Those medals weren’t awarded for perfection; they celebrated resilience, perseverance, curiosity, and the bravery to try again after falling short.

Because that’s what learning is all about.

From turning the pages of a storybook to untangling impossible knots, from knocking over paper cup towers to sitting inside an Optimist dinghy for the very first time, every learner left with something far greater than a prize. They left knowing that mistakes are not the end of the journey. They are where growth begins.
