Broadening Horizons with 9 Miles Project

9Miles Project is a community-based non-profit organization that was founded in Cape Town in 2013.
Using surfing as a form of engagement and empowerment, 9Miles provides safe spaces and structured afterschool programs for at-risk children and youth in coastal communities; and offers mentorship, job creation, skills development, and holistic support to marginalized youth and communities in South Africa.

We are thrilled to announce that Nigel Savel and his team form 9Miles will be one of our pilot sites for our Broadening Horizons Project, funded by International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2025! This is a project to effectively scale our sailing therapy program and share the teachings of The Little Optimist.

We look forward to this partnership and what we can learn from each other.
We share the same ethos and common goal: to improve vulnerable youth’s outlook on life and introduce them to the many benefits of being close to the ocean may have. 9Miles provides surf therapy and has access to a large tidal pool, perfect for introducing sailing.
