The Little Optimist Trust had the pleasure of welcoming a wonderful group of 16 children to one of our pilot sites at Hout Bay Yacht Club, joined by six international mentors for a day filled with fun, excitement and unforgettable sailing experiences.
The day kicked off with great energy and enthusiasm from the children. After enjoying lunch together, the group had the opportunity to learn more about our oceans, the importance of water safety and the exciting world of sailing.
With their life jackets on and excitement building, the children marched down to the dock, where their sailing adventure truly began. They were introduced to the basics of sailing and given the opportunity to experience being out on the water.
Then came everyone’s favourite part – getting out onto the water!
For some of the children, it was their very first time sailing, while others were excited to be back on the water again. The smiles, laughter and enthusiasm throughout the afternoon made it clear just how special the experience was.
We also had the opportunity to get our six international mentors involved, who joined the sailing experience themselves and jumped aboard to share in the fun!
Days like these remind us why we do what we do. Creating opportunities for young people to connect with the ocean, develop new skills, build confidence and experience something they might never have had the chance to try otherwise is what the Little Optimist Trust is all about.
A day like this would not have been possible without the incredible support of everyone who helped make it happen. A huge thank you to Hout Bay Yacht Club, our international mentors and all the amazing individuals who contributed their time, energy and support.
Together, we continue to open doors, create opportunities and bring more young people closer to the ocean, one sailing experience at a time.
