On the eve of Mandela Day, we had the absolute privilege of welcoming the incredible young leaders from Laureus Elect to The Little Optimist Sailing Academy, and what a day it was

From the moment they walked through our doors and were challenged to give themselves a fun nickname for the day, the energy was electric. Laughter filled the air, friendships formed instantly, and the excitement never slowed down.

Before we stepped onto the water, our day began with something even more powerful than sailing stories.

One of our sailing instructors courageously shared his personal journey, reminding every young person in the room that our struggles don’t define us; they shape us. Greg then shared his own inspiring story of overcoming not one but three open-heart surgeries, proving that resilience has no limits. Together, these stories carried a simple but powerful message: every journey is different, every person matters, and every story has the power to inspire someone else.

Then, it was time to go out on the water.

For many of our friends, this was their very first time stepping onto a boat. By the end of the session, every single one of had taken the helm and captained their own dinghy, something many believed was impossible when the day began. Watching uncertainty transform into confidence is why we do what we do.

While the sailing sessions were underway, the park came alive with games, laughter, teamwork, and plenty of healthy competition. It was a beautiful reminder that when everyone’s unique strengths are recognised and celebrated, amazing things happen.

And just when everyone thought the adventure was over, one final challenge awaited, a relay race.

Imagine this: young people who had never sailed before, now racing dinghies as part of a team. Some were nervous. Some were afraid. Some doubted themselves. But they showed up anyway. They chose courage over comfort, and every single one of them crossed that finish line stronger than when they started.

We closed the day with a special prize-giving ceremony, celebrating the relay participants before recognising every single young person with a medal and certificate.

Not because they were the fastest.
Not because they were the strongest.

But because they were brave.

Because they showed heart.

Because they refused to let fear make their decisions.

That is the spirit of Mandela Day, not simply giving back, but helping others discover the courage, confidence, and belief that has always been within them.
