The Little Optimist partnered with the Hout Bay Yacht Club and Zeekoevlei Sailing Centre with the goal of learning how to create an empowering sailing course for both kids and adults to enjoy.

Over the course of three days, the groups of sailing professionals were taught how to create an inspiring story using their own life experiences, as well as how to teach situational awareness, ocean health, safeguarding. They also came up with amazing icebreakers and inclusive activities for kids and adults to enjoy. As well as how to perform a graduation ceremony that will leave kids feeling confident and proud for conquering their fear of sailing. Of course, the group had to participate in some sailing in the little Optimists as well. Everyone got a chance to be on the water and had fun trying out the dinghies.

In the end, this course has taught us how to teach people to dream big, be safe in their surroundings, protect the ocean, and most importantly to have fun as they continue with their sailing journey. Being able to share our experiences, thoughts and ideas with one another was eye-opening and encouraged us all to think outside the box. Reminding us that we all have our own stories, knowledge and experiences that can help to improve those around us.
