On the 12th of September our team had the opportunity to attend a substance abuse conference hosted together with the Education District at the Central District Seminar. The experience was both eye-opening and deeply meaningful. We were given the opportunity to hear important information and insights into how substance abuse is affecting our schools and also how it is impacting our children. One of the most concerning realities discussed was the increasing exposure of young people to substances within their communities and school environments. Substance abuse is not an issue affecting individuals, it can have a ripple effect on families, friendships, education, mental health and the future of our children.
We also had the opportunity to showcase what we offer at The Little Optimist. Showing the education heads and school principals what we can offer to curb substance abuse through our programmes.
For us at The Little Optimist, this conversation is very important because so much of our work involves creating positive experiences and safe spaces for young people. We believe that prevention starts with connection. Children need safe adults they can talk to. They need opportunities to express their emotions, building confidence and developing healthy coping mechanisms as well as understand that asking for help is a strength and not a weakness.
Through our work with children at The Little Optimist, we aim to give them opportunities to discover their strengths, connect with others and experience activities such as sailing and many other activities such as sports that encourage confidence.
The conference reminded us that tackling substance abuse requires more than telling children what not to do. We also need to show them what they can do.
