A Day on the Water with Eros Special School
Today was one of those truly heartwarming days at the Little Optimist Sailing Academy. We had the privilege of welcoming a group of incredible kids from Eros Special School for a day of sailing, learning, and laughter. As they stepped into our space, there was a mix of energy in the air — some were bold and buzzing with excitement, while others held back a little, timid but curious.
It didn’t take long, though, for their nerves to give way to joy. With the warm support and gentle encouragement of our sailing instructors, the group quickly found their rhythm on the water. The instructors not only made them feel safe, but reminded them that sailing is meant to be fun — and fun they definitely had!
Out on the docks and boats, we got to witness the beautiful dynamic among the group. There was splashing, giggling, and the kind of teasing only good friends can get away with. One sailor made sure to wave at the camera every time it turned in his direction (a true performer in the making!). And several of them really embraced the creative section of the questionnaire, showing off their personalities through vibrant drawings.
Among the many moments that stood out today, one young boy named Ronald left a lasting impression. Bursting with confidence, he eagerly volunteered to answer almost every question during the session. His energy was contagious and helped bring the group even closer together. Later in the day, he paused to say a heartfelt “thank you” to the Little Optimist Trust, our team, and the teachers who made this day possible — a simple gesture that truly touched everyone present.
Of course, not all moments were lighthearted. Earlier in the day, we noticed one student who looked especially tired. After his sail, he opened up to us about his daily routine — juggling both school and work, getting home from his shift at 10 p.m., falling asleep around 1 a.m., and waking again at 5 a.m. Despite his exhaustion, he showed genuine joy and appreciation for the opportunity to be on the water. Watching his enthusiasm shine through, even with the weight of his schedule, was nothing short of inspiring.
By the end of the program, many of the kids were still a bit shy when it came to celebrating their newfound titles as sailors. But their smiles and quiet pride said it all. We could see the spark — that sense of accomplishment, adventure, and hope — and we’re pretty sure some of them will be back on the water again soon.
Even in the blazing heat, the warmth that really mattered came from these incredible young sailors — their courage, curiosity, and open hearts reminded us why we do what we do.
To all the children from Eros Special School: thank you for sharing your day with us. You’ve left us inspired, humbled, and full of gratitude.
