ARSHAY COOPER is a Rower, Benjamin Franklin award-winning author, the protagonist of the critically acclaimed film “A Most Beautiful Thing,” a Golden Oar recipient for his contributions to the sport of rowing, motivational speaker, and activist, particularly around issues of accessibility for low-income families.
On the 20th of November, Arshay joined us for an Inspiration evening at The Little Optimist.
The evening began with a group of Matric students from Heideveld – who bravely took to the very choppy canal and enjoyed a quick sailing experience.
Drinks and snacks followed as everyone shared their stories with each other.
Our Founder, Greg Bertish, shared the story of The Little Optimist and Adrienne Coleman shared her story from being a shy young lady to becoming a sailing instructor at The Little Optimist Academy.
Pastor Vernon Bosch, a regular at The Academy, gave us his insight as to how sailing at The Little Optimist has changed the lives of the kids he deals with on a daily basis.
The guests were then treated to a talk by Arshay Cooper – who shared his story of hardship and resilience.
“In rowing, you move forward by looking in the opposite direction. I learned that it’s ok to look back, as long as you keep pushing forward.”
– Arshay Cooper
The movie A Most Beautiful Thing, based on Arshays’s book, was shown at The Labia on 21 November. All who attended the inspiration evening also attended the movie.
